For Greg: Daniel King's Powerplay 8 Coming Soon

This blog post is for Greg of Greg's Chess Progress.

I know he is an avid fan of Daniel King's Powerplay DVD series so here's something I heard from the grapevine.

A little birdie told me that Daniel King is releasing his Powerplay 8 : Knights and Bishops very soon and it would be based on how to effectively use Bishops and Knights (well, duh *grin*).

:)

The DVD would be out within the month.

The synopsis reads as follows:

"When we are starting out in chess we are told that knights and bishops both have a value of three points, but it is quite clear that in some positions a bishop is clearly superior to a knight - and vice versa.

After watching this 8th Power Play DVD you’ll have a better idea of how to play positions with knights and bishops – what to look for, what to avoid, and how to place your pawns. Throughout the DVD, specially selected positions will enable you to test your understanding of the subject."

  1. Thanks so much for thinking of me - a very kind gesture to be sure. I'm still working through Power Play 7, but you can bet that #8 will be added to my collection as soon as it can be obtained. Thanks again!

  3. greg: no worries! :)

chesstiger: quite likely as well. sometimes, it's downright confusing. last week, i had a blitz game against my brother-in-law and ground him down to a winning endgame in a starting position with 2N+B+3P v 2B+N+3P endgame and the Knights wreaked havoc in that position resulting in a winning N+3P v B endgame.

Sometimes, in an open field, 2 Knights can be just as dangerous as 2 Bishops. The problem herein is recognising when it works and when it doesn't.

    I myself gets confused sometimes.

I would be interested in having a quick look at King's videos wrt this and hope it's not something too basic.

  4. Benefits of a kNight: It is capable to attack, defend, all squares (white and black)

Benefits of Bishop: It can attack, defend, long range.

Negative of N: It has to be close to where the action is so it can be attacked during.

Negative of B: It can only walk, go, over one colour of squares.

These are also factors one has to be aware of beside the closed and open position.
