Christmas Presents For Chess Buffs

It's that time of season again. And this year, my Christmas presents have been planned beforehand.

My father-in-law is getting Muller's Endgame DVDs from Chessbase for his Christmas present.

Last year, I got him Ari Ziegler's The French Defense DVD (from Chessbase) for his Christmas present but apparently, he didn't think much of the French Defense. The year before, I gave him the book Tal-Botvinnik 1960 which he did read it and play through and analyse the annotated games in less than 1 week!

My brother-in-law on the other hand is getting one of Daniel King's PowerPlay DVDs.

With Christmas around the corner, I'm enjoying Convekta's Total Chess Training and am currently reading a rather nice book, Mikhail Sherevsky's Endgame Strategy. I hope to finish the book come new year.

  1. Wow, what a coinky-dink. The DVDs in my collection are the first three Powerplay DVDs by Daniel King, the Ziegler French Defense one, and the first three Muller endgame DVDs.

I think Ziegler's is great, but if you don't care for the french it'd be like buying a fish a bicycle.

The second and third Powerplay DVDs deliver much more bang for the buck than the first, imo. I felt I got a lot out of them.

  2. Hippo,

Thanks for visiting getting to 2000.

I have visited Sydney a couple of times. I really love the city.

There is a chance I may visit again in 2008.

I will add your site to my links

  3. Do you know theDown Under Knight?

    Getting to 2000

  4. grandpatzer: lol! My father-in-law has Ziegler's French DVD which I gave it to him last Christmas. I'll do a proper review on the Ziegler DVD when I visit him sometime in January. Thanks for the note about Ziegler.

I have all 4 of Muller's DVDs, 2 of King's DVD which was the 1st and the 3rd. I may be able to scam... errm.... borrow King's latest Powerplay 5 DVD. I wasn't really impressed with his 1st DVD, honest it be said.

I'm now running through Muller's 1st DVD and I'll post a short review of it once I've finished with the material.

Getting to 2000: thanks for the kind words about Sydney. I've always look forward to your blogs as they're very informative. Keep up the good work! I've not met Down Under Knight. In fact, I haven't met him IRL although I've met Closet Grandmaster before more than a year ago (but I hadn't start a blog back then and I didn't know about his blog till much later).

  5. What is Closet Grandmaster's chess strength?

  6. anonymous, I just had a quick scan on the ACF website. His current FIDE rating is at the near 2000 level.

  7. What is the Closet Grandmaster's real name?

  8. I'm not sure if he wants me to reveal his name or if he wants to remain anonymous and on that, I respect his right to his privacy.

    Why not ask him? :)
